The Truth About Bhagat Singh

 INTRODUCTION :

1- 23 March 1931, it has been 90 years since the day when Rajguru, Sukhdev, and Bhagat Singh were martyred. The three were only in their twenties at the time of their passing.

2- Today, we all know about Bhagat Singh, but I believe he is one of our country's misconstrued and distorted freedom fighters.

3- We know about him but never try to understand his opinions, ideas, and ideologies.

4- His contribution to the independence struggle is second only to Mahatma Gandhi's. Sadly, those who kept the revolution alive and demanded sovereignty have not been awarded Bharat Ratna yet.

CEREBRAL :

1- Whenever we hear the name Bhagat Singh we associate it with words like weapons and violence but do you know that he was considered a fierce intellectual of his time? He was also honoured with titles such as 'Prince of the martyr' and 'Son of the nation'.

2-He had extensively studied British, European, American, and Russian literature. According to some estimates, he had read over 250 books before being arrested. And the two years he spent in jail, he read over 300 books in prison.

3- He was also known for his writings. His articles were published in magazines such as Kirti, Akali, Veer Arjun, and Pratap, sometimes with his name and sometimes with his pseudo-name Balraj.

4- Bhagat Singh once said, "Bombs and pistols cannot bring revolution sword is sharpened on thoughts".

SHAHEED DIWAS: THE STORY

1- In 1928, Simon Commission was set up to suggest constitutional changes in India's constitution, but there wasn't a single Indian representative to churn out those reforms.

2- Protests across the nation erupted.

3- Lala Lajpat Rai was among the protesters. Then Police superintendent James Scott ordered a lathi charge on Lala Lajpat Rai and his supporters, which left him bruised and battered and ultimately led to Lala Lajpat Rai's demise.

4- Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev wanted to avenge Lala Lajpat Rai's demise. And they went to kill Police superintendent James Scott, but they killed deputy superintendent Saunders instead. That became the cause of their punishment, and they were later hanged to death.

5- But the exciting thing is that Bhagat Singh was left-leaning, and Lala Lajpat Rai was right-leaning. Despite having opposite world view, the two were quite close.

6- No matter their independent opinions or choices, the ultimate plan was clear: a free sovereign India. But the assassination of Saunders failed to inspire the extreme reactions Bhagat Singh had anticipated.

7- Gandhi and other prominent leaders of the congress party commended it.

8- He famously said, "If the deaf had to hear, sound has to be very loud".

9- Along with Batukeshwar Dutt, Bhagat Singh exploded a few smoke bombs in the Central Hall of Parliament. The goal was to promote the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association ( HSRA ) and inspire an extreme reaction.

10- They had both agreed before the bombing to appear before the court. The plan was to use the court as the stage for their message.

11- Interesting fact: Bhagat Singh had entered the assembly hall in clever disguise, which later became an iconic photograph of his. The legendary image of Bhagat Singh.  Yes, you got it right.

12- Bhagat Singh continued to voice his protest even in jail. In 1929, he sat on a hunger strike.
His demand; That they are treated with the same dignity in prison as British inmates were. And they should be given the status of political prisoners.

13- Jatin Das, a prominent freedom fighter and a member of HSRA, who had participated in this hunger strike, passed away after 63 days.

14- Bhagat Singh and his party received nationwide support after this incident.

15- Meanwhile, the fame of revolutionaries from their hunger strikes and court statements soared, while the image of the British was at its lowest ebb.

16- Bhagat Singh ended his strike after 116 days. Until then, all Britishers accepted almost all of his demands except that status of political prisoners. It is not given even today to the "AANDOLANJIVIS".

WHAT HAPPENED ON THE EXECUTION DAY?

1- British govt predicted a widespread backlash on execution day. And that is why they preponed it ( From 24 March 1931 to 23 March 1931 ) in complete secrecy.

2- Jail superintendent Chhatar Singh informed Bhagat Singh about this move. Still, Bhagat Singh was not bothered by it because he was busy reading a book written by Russian revolutionary Vladimir Lenin.

3- The early morning atmosphere was quiet until the three revolutionaries emerged from jail shouting

4- Firstly, Bhagat Singh, then Raj guru and at last, Sukhdev were hanged. They were not only turned but also dragged in the dirty passageway, chopped into pieces, stuffed into sacks, and whisked out of the jail compound surreptitiously.

5- On the banks of the river Sutlej, two holy men awaited. One man was Sikh, and the other religious man was Hindu.

6- They read out the final prayers over the remains, and then the bodies were swiftly loaded onto a suttee to burn furiously in the ghostly silence of the night.

7- Before the heap had wholly burnt out, and as a sunrise menace to break over the calm waters of the Sutlej, the terrific fires were rapidly put out.

8- The burnt remains were then directed to the river. The exact spot was to be later recognised as Post No. 201.

9 -As soon as the person and the police officers had gone, villagers watching the whole thing with suspicion went into the water.

10- They reclaimed the body parts and set about igniting them properly. They had always been there for the people so, so it was then the people who gave Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru the nobility in death that they already had in their lives.

“Merciless criticism and independent thinking are the two necessary traits of revolutionary thinking.”
